This is my hood and I can tell you, it’s an amazing place to live with booming real estate, some great schools that I’ll touch on in this video, and a whole lot more… watch as I take you through the Best of Waterloo Region.
Doon is considered to be part of Kitchener West, but it’s really located on the southern side of Kitchener, right off the Homer Watson exit of the 401. There’s a ton of new construction around here, mostly in Doon South and you can find a lot of developed areas in Lower Doon, Pioneer Park, and Brigadoon, the smaller suburbs that make up this community.
A lot of people in this neighbourhood don’t realize that we have some beautiful trails and scenery right in our own backyards! I’m coming to you live from the Marguerite Ormston Trailway that connects Doon South with Lower Doon and Pioneer Park. It follows Schneider Creek to the Grand River and takes you past the Doon Mills Ruins, through Homer Watson Park Trail, and onto Doon Heritage Village and the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum. The ruins are an old Saw Mill and Flour Mill that experienced their own respective fires back in the day and are now considered “haunted.” The museum is the largest community museum in Ontario with two indoor museum galleries and acts as the entrance to Doon Heritage Village, a sixty-acre living history village open seasonally from May first to December twenty third.
All of The Region of Waterloo here!
Pioneer Park Plaza is smack dap in the middle of Doon and has recently been revamped to accommodate the growing population. Zehrs was moved across the parking lot to a new, fifty thousand square foot location, an LCBO was added, Shoppers Drug Mart now sits in a stand-alone store, and the bank and restaurants are all in brand-new stores as well! Across the street construction crews have been busy updating Pioneer Park which now has brand new diamonds, basketball courts, and soccer fields.
There are a few local hotspots to check-out while you’re in the neighbourhood too. At the top of Pioneer Park, you’ll find the Edelweiss, a long-standing tavern that’s been around since nineteen seventy-two. They feature live music, great food, and an excellent selection of beer. If you head back down to Pioneer Park Plaza, pop your head into the Rabbit Fox, another excellent local watering hole. If you’re in the mood for a quick bite on the go, then my favourite little hidden gem is Pizzeria La Terrazza. This quant, little pizza joint is at the roundabout at Doon South and Doon Mills Drive. They make pizza from fresh tossed dough, and homemade sauce. I love swinging by for a slice or bringing a whole pie home at the end of a long day.
When searching for homes, my clients always have a list of questions and concerns but knowing what their options are for their kid’s educations is always top of the list. Luckily, Doon has some excellent schools like Doon Public School, Groh Public School, Timothy Catholic School, Pioneer Public School, and JW Gerth Public School, just to name a few. When looking for homes, we always take a peek at what school district the properties lie in and then map out how far a walk or drive it would be for the kids to get to school. For example, I’m coming to you from Creek Ridge Street right now which falls under JW Gerth Public School. From here, I’m about a five-minute walk, or a short, one-minute drive to the school. These things are important to a lot of home buyers but don’t worry, your Realtor will be able to tell you everything you need to know about the local schools and their districts.
Since we’re on the topic of schools, right up the road from here, in Lower Doon, is Conestoga College, one Canada’s fastest growing colleges’, main campus. It definitely lends itself to Doon’s hot real estate market. When you get tired of learning, you can head next door to Doon Valley Golf Course for a quick round of golf. Doon Valley is one of Kitchener’s two city courses and is actually pretty decent for a city course. They offer twenty-seven holes of golf plus a nine hole pitch-and-put with some pretty competitive pricing.
